Communicating to Patients with Dementia

Caring for a patient with Alzheimer’s can be a challenge, even for the most experienced caregiver. They find it hard to remember or to even understand things so sometimes, there’s resistance, anger, or aggressiveness on their end. The most important thing is to be able to be patient and to communicate effectively with them. Here are some communication strategies you can do.

  • Speak in a Low Tone and Always be Mindful of Your Voice

Whether you’re helping your patient with personal care or other things and the communication gets tough, make sure you always regulate your voice to a low tone. Screaming or speaking loudly will contribute to their confusion only.

  • Remember That Conversations are Two-Way

Experts from home health services would always advise their caregivers to speak normally as they would have done to other people, their patients with dementia. While they may have a condition making understanding and communication difficult, it does not stop them from being able to converse. Dementia patients deserve all the respect. Listen to them as well.

  • Make Instructions Easy to Follow

When speaking to them, speak in easy-to-understand words. Don’t speak as if you’re conducting a lecture on a Science topic. Remember that these patients called you, a company providing in-home care services in California, to help them out and not to make life more difficult.

When helping dementia patients, patience is the key. It does not help when you as the caregiver cannot communicate well because you get impatient with them.
